The Wellbeing Services County of Pirkanmaa/ Tampere University Hospital (TAUH) provides demanding specialized care services to over one million inhabitants in the Pirkanmaa area. Tampere University Hospital is one of the largest research and training hospitals in Finland. The hospital participates in numerous ongoing scientific research projects and provides facilities to conduct clinical trials in its premises, large-scale statistical services for researchers, and an active biobank that hosts samples from DIPP studies among other studies.
The DIPP Study, started in 1994, is carried out in collaboration with the Wellbeing Services County of Pirkanmaa (PIRHA) and Tampere University, and the Universities and University Hospitals of Oulu and Turku. It is an exceptionally large prospective birth cohort study. The children who have been invited to the study have genetically increased risk for type 1 diabetes (T1D) and celiac disease (CD). To date, almost 20,000 children have participated to comprehensive follow-up and regular serological screening of T1D and CD.
