International Symposium: Exploring Viral Triggers in Autoimmunity

On November 4, 2025, the Oslo Diabetes Research Center and ENT1DEP Study Group hosted an International Symposium title, The Role of Virus in the Etiology of Autoimmune Diseases. The event brought together clinicians, researchers, and experts in virology and immunology to explore how viral infections may contribute to autoimmune diseases.

The program examined three key questions

  1. Can viral infections trigger autoimmune diseases
  2. How can persistent low grade viral infections be detected in human tissue
  3. What new antiviral and vaccine strategies could support future treatment and prevention

Speakers presented evidence on immune mechanisms and shared findings linking viral activity to diseases such as Type 1 Diabetes and Multiple Sclerosis. Discussions also focused on new methods to detect low grade viral infections directly in tissue, providing more precise insights into disease progression.

In the final sessions, researchers reflected on emerging antiviral and vaccine strategies and how these could shape future prevention and care for autoimmune diseases.
