Our work package partner INSERM published the latest review on Cross Talk between Beta Cells and Immune Cells: What We Know, What We Think We Know, and What We Should Learn, authored by Fatoumata Samassa, Capucine Holtzmann, and Roberto Mallone.
This review, published in Cold Spring Harbor Perspectives in Medicine, unpacks the “cross-talk” between these cells—how β cells not only become targets of immune attacks but may also play active roles in triggering or resisting these attacks. It explores how specific interactions between β cells and immune cells—particularly receptor-ligand pairs and signals like type I interferons—can dictate whether β cells are more susceptible or resistant to autoimmunity. The authors challenge existing assumptions about “benign” autoimmunity, where immune cells recognise islet antigens without necessarily causing Type 1 Diabetes, raising important questions about why only some individuals with autoimmune markers progress to the disease.
